Regular oral examinations, ideally scheduled twice per year, allow your dentist the opportunity to identify any oral health issues which may be emerging in your mouth and to make a plan to treat them accordingly.
During this examinations, your dentist will closely examine and assess the health of your teeth, bite, jaw and gums. Exams may also include oral cancer screenings, x-rays and any other required diagnostic procedures.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer can affect any part of the mouth or surrounding tissues. During your exam, your dentist will check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer which are difficult to detect with the naked eye.
Oral Health Care at Home
Make sure you brush your teeth twice per day for two minutes each and floss at least once per day to keep your smile healthy between dental appointments.
Both before and after your dental examinations, your dental hygienist will conduct a deep clean of your gums and teeth to help prevent and treat diseases.
To start, they will use a scaler to remove any tartar and buildup of plaque. Them they will use coarse tooth paste and a polisher to remove any leftover plaque or stains from your teeth. Finally, they will floss your teeth and gums.
If you or your child has a high risk of tooth decay, your dentist may also recommend a fluoride treatment. Fluoride is a natural mineral that can help to rebuild the minerals in your tooth enamel to prevent or reverse tooth decay.
